DAY BY DAY BRIEF

Day 1:  An easy cycle north takes you to the coastal community of Bay View before you wind your way through the Ahuriri Station, a working sheep farm and low-lying wetlands.  On reaching the Ahuriri Estuary take some time to view the protected birdlife in this Department of Conservation Wildlife Sanctuary.  Arriving in Taradale reward your cycling efforts with a visit to New Zealand’s oldest winery, The Mission Estate, before making your way to your overnight accommodation.

Day 2:  The Puketapu Loop, a favourite trail for locals and visitors alike!  Following the Tutaekuri River you’re in for a treat-filled day visiting a historic Moari Pa Site, an Organic Winery, a Classic Rural Pub and a Chocolate Factory.  What could be better!  In the summer months there’s also an excellent swimming spot to cool off before the cycle home to your Taradale accommodation.

Day 3:  Rest Day Taradale.

Day 4:  Today all the cycling is taken care of in the morning with a beautiful ride through orchard and farmland country, following the rivers of the Tutaekuri and Ngaruroro to the world acclaimed Ngatarawa Gimblett Gravels appellation.  The afternoon is then all about the wine!  Enjoy the ambience of the many Cellar Doors offering tastings and winery style food before your late afternoon transfer to your overnight accommodation in the vibrant village of Havelock North.

Day 5:  Today’s route is cycled in part on the roads of the Tuki Tuki Valley, acclaimed as one of ‘New Zealand’s Classic Road Rides’ by cycling authors the Kennett Brothers.  The scenic views over the valley and vineyards are stunning and the lack of cars make the cycling very relaxed. Reaching the coast a long, lazy lunch at one of the fine wineries of Te Awanga Coast rounds out a truly lovely day before your return transfer to your Havelock North accommodation.

Day 6:  Rest day Havelock North.

Day 7:  Join ‘frisky’ cattle who share the trail following the Tuki Tuki River as you make you way to the coast and the East Clive wetlands.  The countryside is dominated by apple orchards, vineyards and market gardens, reminding you of this regions status as the Food Bowl of New Zealand.  On reaching the outskirts of the city you follow the Norfolk Palm lined Marine Parade to the centre of Napier, the ‘Art Deco Capital of the World’.  Spend some time viewing the distinctive architectural style of the buildings before the final 5km cycle back to Ahuriri.

“As a group we have just completed a five day cycle trail of the Hawkes Bay organised by Jenny of Takaro Trails. The bikes were great, the planned routes very doable and the accommodation organised by Jenny was excellent. We were able to visit and sample wineries through out the journey and found excellent food stops. Jenny and her staff were very friendly, efficient and helpful. All pick ups were on time and I would highly recommend this company.”

NEW for 2016 we have a limited number of quality Moustache E Bikes available for hire on our multi day tours. Surcharge applies.
