Taradale to Ahuriri via Puketapu and the Estuary Trail - 50kms
DAY BY DAY BRIEF:
Day 1: A day of diversity! From the Art Deco glamour of the Napier CBD to the moody coastline of Marine Parade and the mouths of the regions three rivers the scene is ever-changing. Turning inland the final 10kms takes you through stunning orchard ad vineyard country to the bustling, stylish village of Havelock North for your overnight stay.
Day 2: Start the day with a visit to the renowned Birdwoods Gallery and Sweet Shop before enjoying a pleasant ride through flat farmland to the world acclaimed Ngatarawa Gimblett Gravels appellation. There’s much to enjoy as you spend some time visiting the Cellar Doors of some of the regions finest wineries. Leaving the wineries behind you join the Tutaekuri River trail for the final stretch to your overnight stay in Taradale.
Day 3: This morning is spent cycling the 20km ‘Puketapu Loop’, a favourite with visitors and locals alike. A visit to New Zealand’s oldest winery, The Mission Estate, is then a ‘must do’ before the history lesson continues as you join the Ahuriri Estuary Trail and cycle through through a unique wildlife sanctuary. As you go it’s sobering to reflect on the fact that before the big earthquake of 1931 all this area was a vast tidal inlet encompassing thousands of hectares of wetland, marshes and mud banks. Oh how a landscape can change in an instant! The final part of the route returns you to the coast, passing the popular surf beach of Westshore and back to your start point in Ahuriri.
“We were a group of 11 riding the Hawke’s Bay Trails. Takaro staff were fantastic, very accommodating to our needs. A friendly, thoroughly professional service.”
