DAY BY DAY BRIEF:
Day 1: A day of diversity! From the Art Deco glamour of the Napier CBD to the moody coastline of Marine Parade and the mouths of the regions three rivers the scene is ever-changing. You will cycle past Black Barn, Te Mata Estate (stop for wine tasting) and the iconic Arataki Honey (NZ’s biggest manuka honey producer) and Origin Earth where you can taste artisan cheese to go with your wine. A great way to finish today is to head to one of the many renowned restaurants in Havelock North for a memorable dinner.
Day 2: Today’s route is cycled in part on the roads of the Tuki Tuki Valley, acclaimed as one of ‘New Zealand’s Classic Road Rides’ by cycling authors the Kennett Brothers. The scenic views over the valley and vineyards are stunning and the lack of cars make the cycling very relaxed. It also passes by Craggy Range Winery one of the most visually stunning vineyards in Hawke’s Bay – a definite must-see!
Reaching the coast you can enjoy a long, lazy lunch at one of the fine wineries of Te Awanga Coast (Te Awanga, Clearview or Elephant Hill) or get fish and chips on the beach before you return to your Havelock North accommodation.
OPTION: If you spend your afternoon relaxing at the Cape wineries, you can book our shuttle to pick you up and transfer you to your Havelock North accommodation ($25pp for the shuttle). Shuttle ride back to Havelock North to be booked as an extra to your tour.
Day 3: Start the day with a ride through the city i-ways of Hastings before enjoying a pleasant amble through flat farmland to the world acclaimed Ngatarawa Gimblett Gravels appellation. There’s much to enjoy as you spend some time visiting the cellar doors of some of the regions finest wineries including Sileni Estates, Oak Estate, Trinity Hill and Te Awa.
OPTIONS FROM Te Awa:
1. Get back on your bike after lunch and cycle the Ngararuro/Tutaekuri River trails to your overnight stay in Taradale (30km from Te Awa winery)
2. Take a long lunch at Te Awa, and ask our shuttle to pick you up and transfer you to your Taradale accommodation ($25pp for the shuttle). Shuttle ride to Taradale to be booked with your tour.
Day 4: Follow the Tutaekuri river trails to the Puketapu Loop, a favourite trail for locals and visitors alike! Following the river trails you’re in for a treat-filled day visiting a historic Maori Pa Site, Moana Park – an organic winery, a classic rural pub and Silky Oak Chocolate Factory. Stop at the Puketapu country pub for lunch – they’re famous for their cold beers and hot chips!
In the summer months there’s also an excellent swimming spot to cool off before the cycle back to your Taradale accommodation. You can visit New Zealand’s oldest winery, Mission Estate for dinner – treat yourself!
OPTION: to cycle an extra 25km loop along country roads from Puketapu to Puketitiri and back. A real leg burner with the country roads winding through remote hilly farmland country.
Day 5: Cycle to the Ahuriri Estuary and take some time to view the protected birdlife in this Department of Conservation Wildlife Sanctuary, before making your way to north via easy cycle pathways winding through the Ahuriri Station, a working sheep farm and low-lying wetlands. You end up at the coastal community of Bay View where you can stop at Crab Farm, a rustic family owned winery for great wine or just a coffee and light lunch. You then head along the final part of the route along the Pacific coast, passing the popular surf beach of Westshore and around the fishing port back to your start point in Ahuriri.
