DAY BY DAY BRIEF:

Day 1 (25km): An easy cycle north takes you to the coastal community of Bay View before you wind your way through the Ahuriri Station, a working sheep farm and low-lying wetlands.  Cross to the Ahuriri Estuary and view the variety of protected birdlife in this Department of Conservation Wildlife Sanctuary. Arriving in Taradale, visit New Zealand’s oldest winery, Mission Estate, and Church Road winery – they are within 200m of each other, before making your way to your overnight accommodation.

Day 2 (20-45km):  The Puketapu Loop, a favourite trail for locals and visitors alike!  Following the scenic bike path along the Tutaekuri River you can visit the historic Otātara Maori Pa site, Moana Park Organic Winery, Puketapu Hotel a classic rural pub and Silky Oaks Chocolate Factory.  What could be better! In the summer months there’s also an excellent swimming spot to cool off before the cycle back to your Taradale accommodation.

OPTION Want more riding? Carry on riding past Puketapu along the quiet country roads and loop back to Taradale along Puketitiri Road for an extra 25km ride.

Day 3 (40-55kms):  Today your cycle ride is through orchard and farmland country, following the rivers of the Tutaekuri to the coast and back inland along the Ngāruroro to the world acclaimed Ngatarawa Gimblett Gravels appellation.  The afternoon is then all about the wine! Enjoy the ambience of the many cellar doors offering tastings and winery style food. There’s much to enjoy as you visit the cellar doors of some of the regions finest wineries including Sileni Estates, Oak Estate, Trinity Hill and Te Awa. It’s a 40km ride to Selini Estate.

Now you have options:
1. Get back on your bike after the winery visits and cycle through Flaxmere and Hastings city to your overnight stay in Havelock North (18km from Hastings Golf Club cafe on Maraekakaho Rd)
2. Book our shuttle to pick you up from the Hastings Golf Club cafe and transfer you to your Havelock North accommodation ($25pp for the shuttle). Shuttle ride to Havelock North to be booked as an extra to your tour.

Day 4: Rest day in Havelock North. Take a late breakfast at one of the many cafes in town and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the village. Spend your time shopping in the boutique stores, walking up Te Mata Peak, visiting the gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers or just relaxing at your accommodation.

OPTION let us know if you want any additional tours booked for this day, we are happy to book for you.

Day 5 (30-45km): Today’s route includes the roads along the Tuki Tuki Valley, acclaimed as one of ‘New Zealand’s Classic Road Rides’ by cycling authors the Kennett Brothers.  The scenic views over the valley and vineyards are stunning and the lack of cars make the cycling very relaxed. It also passes by Craggy Range Winery one of the most visually stunning vineyards in Hawke’s Bay – a definite must-see!

Reaching the coast a long, lazy lunch at one of the fine wineries of Te Awanga Coast (Te Awanga, Clearview or Elephant Hill) or get fish and chips on the beach before your return to Havelock North.

OPTION: If you spend your afternoon relaxing at the Cape wineries and you dont want to ride back, you can book our shuttle to pick you up and transfer you to your Havelock North accommodation ($25pp for the shuttle).  Shuttle ride back to Havelock North to be booked as an extra to your tour

Day 6 (35km): Leaving Havelock North, you join ‘frisky’ cattle who share the trail following the Tuki Tuki River as you make your way to the coast and the East Clive wetlands.  The countryside is dominated by apple orchards, vineyards and market gardens, reminding you of the Hawke’s Bay region’s status as the Food Bowl of New Zealand.  On reaching the outskirts of Napier city you follow the Norfolk Palm lined Marine Parade to the centre of Napier, the ‘Art Deco Capital of the World’. Spend some time viewing the distinctive architectural style of the buildings before the final 5km cycle back to Ahuriri and the Tākaro Trails base.
